Derek "Bert" Halbert was born on July 5,1946 and grew up in Pointe Claire, Quebec. He spend 33 years teaching and coaching children, in Pte. Claire and in the Hudson/St. Lazare area. Although he began his career as an elementary school teacher, he soon found himself teaching in the gym and coaching everything from basketball and gymnastics to volleyball. Although he always enjoyed looking at art, it was only upon retiring that he decided to develop his "other side" by taking watercolour lessons (thanks to a gentle nudge from a colleague who was also retiring). What began as an amusing pastime has developed, over the last three years, into an abiding passion.

At times, Derek seems surprised by his own artistic abilities, almost as if it belongs to someone else. He usually works from photographs (most of which he takes himself) and particularly enjoys working on landscapes and scenes of local interest. Derek takes part in the Hudson Artists fall and spring shows. He also accepts commissions.
