These paintings are a meditation on both the language of landscape and the language of painting itself.
I’m interested in exploring different approaches to landscape, merging both realistic and symbolic versions of landscape elements in the same work, as well as in contrasting the illusion of depth with visual cues that refer to the picture plane. The paintings ‘Un lac et deux montagnes’ are all based on the same visual structure of two simplified mountains and a lake.
Living in a rural setting, and spending time outdoors just watching and listening opens my mind to the myriad of lives and energies, the buzz of a thousand umwelten*. I watch the birds seeming at times so purposeful, at times playful, and I wonder what they see from their monocular eyes, two views at once.
With this series of paintings I am trying to capture not just what the landscape looks like, but what it feels like as well.
*An umwelt is the specific way in which organisms of a particular species perceive and experience the world, shaped by the capabilities of their sensory organs and perceptual systems. (Wikipedia)
